Mothers, we honor you today. Iím not going to bore you with all the details of how this holiday got started in our country. But I do want to spend some time looking at Scripture as it concerns the beginning of motherhood.
Letís begin with the arrival of the woman on the scene in Godís creation.
Ge 2:18 And the LORD God said, "It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him."
God had just given Adam the responsibility of tending the garden and the instructions to not eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. And He makes an observation. Itís not good for a man to be alone, he needs a counterpart who will help him.
Adam was a puzzle piece....can I hear an amen ladies? Good because Eve was also a puzzle piece, can I hear an even louder amen, men? Both puzzle pieces made by God and joined together in holy matrimony. The bride of Adam was given to him to by God for the purpose of completing him and helping him.
But notice that God didnít just snap his fingers and make a woman to give to Adam. Adam had to first of all see his need. So God came up with a plan to give him the opportunity.
19 Out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to Adam to see what he would call them. And whatever Adam called each living creature, that was its name.
You see, woman has not yet arrived on the scene. This naming of the animals was the first ever bachelor party and it was attended by God and Adam. And God brings every animal that He has created to Adam, and He says, ďHey Adam what are you gonna name this one with the long nose?
And Adam says, ďAardvark! How about this green slimy one? Frog! How about this waddly thing with the big beak? Duck! And I can just hear them having a whale of a time as Adam comes up with all these creative names.
I can just imagine God and Adam in perfect fellowship enjoying this task! Platypus? Oh Adam my friend, thatís a good one! But while Adam was naming the animals, he began to notice that something was missing in his life.
20 So Adam gave names to all cattle, to the birds of the air, and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper comparable to him.
The implication is that Adam saw something the animals had and he didnít...a mate. So he yearned to have what these animals had. God knew Adam needed that, but He wanted Adam to know it too and so He gave him the task of naming the animals. Listen guys.
One of the tragedyís in our world today is that young men donít see their need. They think their need is purely sexual and in this age of promiscuity, that need is easily met. And they have so many other things to turn to, so many other diversions that they overlook the fact that they are missing a rib, and they need that rib to be complete.
And listen girls you have been lied to by the media and you think the way to catch a man is to give in to his sexual advances, but the more you do that the more you put off the wedding date.
I read a statistic not to long ago that says the average age of marriage for women is now 27, and for men even higher. And one of the reasons is too many young women and men are sleeping around.
God brought the woman out of Adam to complement him, to make him complete, to make them a unit, so that they might cooperate in all the good work that God has given them to do. So when you are looking for a mate, be looking for someone who ďcompletesĒ you.
We donít get married to have sex, we get married because we have found our missing piece and sex is just a wonderful byproduct! And it is the vehicle through which man is to be fruitful and multiply. So be looking for that missing piece guys and gals, and be looking for someone who will be a good Christian mother or father for your children, should God bless you with a family. And remember that whoever that person is, you must be willing to work as a unit with them.
21 And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place. 22 Then the rib which the LORD God had taken from man He made into a woman, and He brought her to the man.
The rib, located on the side, because man and woman are meant to walk side by side in life. The woman to come alongside to help and make the man look good, and the man to honor and protect her just as he instinctively protects his ribs.
Donít miss whoís giving away the bride here. God, the Father, brought her to Adam. There was no preacher so Adam with womanís hand in his says a few words,
23 And Adam said: "This is now bone of my bones And flesh of my flesh; She shall be called Woman, Because she was taken out of Man." (NKJV)
This was Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve because the woman, taken out of man must be matched up with man, same sex marriages donít cut it in Godís way of thinking. Adam wasnít wondering why there wasnít a suitable ďmaleĒ help meet for himself. He was wondering where the female was!
Then God, speaking through the Holy Spirit gives some additional instructions to the newlyweds. The first thing he tells the couple is they are to ďBe fruitful and multiply, fill the earth and subdue it!Ē Make babies!
They are not to make them before marriage. The command comes after they are married. Then when babies are conceived, they become parents. A father and a mother. They are to raise their children for the day when they will also get married and Lord willing produce godly offspring.
And in Genesis 2:24 we see the first mention of mother in the Bible.
ďTherefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife and they shall become one flesh.Ē
Again, whenever you see the word ďthereforeĒ in Scripture, you must go back to see what the therefore is there for!
So because God created man and woman and commanded them to be fruitful and multiply, they are to eventually leave their parents and be joined to each other and become one flesh, to repeat the cycle over and over again.
This is the way it was and is from the beginning folks. Will all marry? No. Jesus said to some it is given to be eunichs. The Apostle Paul also talked about those who like himself remained single. Will all wives become mothers? No! Sometimes God brings barrenness into the situation.
But these are the exceptions and not the rules. Godís plan for motherhood is to find that Christian mate who fits the piece of your puzzle. Find that mate that you are willing to come alongside and help and encourage and respect till death parts you, and then pray that God blesses you with children.
An important part of the process is the leaving and the cleaving. Mothers...fathers...you gotta let go of your children. Too many times parents and children arenít willing to let go. But you canít be a good wife, husband, mother, or father, if you fail to let go of your parents, and parents are just asking for trouble if they play games to keep you connected to them.
Leave and cleave. The idea of cleaving is to be inseparable. Itís like being glued together with super glue. Thatís how strong and permanent the matrimonial bond is to be. The bond between children and parents is to be strong...but not permanent.
Iíve been taking Dad to the wound clinic because of some festering wounds on his legs. There is a strong bond between the bandages they put on and his skin. If they just yank the bandage off, they will re-open the wound and so they very carefully apply a little bit of water at a time and slowly peel the bandage back. The wound is not reopened in this way and itís not as painful.
This is the way we are to be with our children. There comes a time when they have to leave. But we just donít rip the bandage off. We donít just cut them loose all at once. It is a gradual process of granting freedom.
Kids, one of the best Motherís Day gift you could give to your mom is to realize this truth. Stop pressing for too much freedom before your time! Purpose in your heart to honor and obey your mother and your father. They are one! Trust your mother and fatherís judgement in this. They got you this far, trust them to finish the job.
Mothers....fathers....you also must know this truth. You cannot keep your kids forever. They must be allowed to sprout wings and fly. You must slowly and gently apply the grace of freedom just like pulling a band-aid off a wound.
You will always be their mother, you will always be their father and there is a strong bond of love in that relationship, but that bond cannot be as intense as the bond between husband and wife.
And the reason that a child leaves the bond of his or her parents is to become superglued to their mate and the process starts all over again. Remember this about super glue. It works most effectively when both surfaces are clean.
Keep yourselves clean kids, keep your relationship with the Lord right. Donít go trying to bond something before itís time. The super glue of marriage is God the Holy Spirit and He wants you to remain pure before marriage. Purity is the best start toward motherhood that anyone could ask for.
So Adam and woman are married and woman sins and God curses mothers till the end of time because of her sin.
Ge 3:16 To the woman he said, Great will be your pain in childbirth; in sorrow will your children come to birth; still your desire will be for your husband, but he will be your master.
I donít know how God was going to arrange it, but childbirth before the fall wouldíve been a piece of cake. (Not that it isnít now, I mean whatís a little throwing up, and walking around with a 7 pound bowling ball for a couple of months and then the tiny miscomfort of labor for a day or so)
This is what woman brought on all mothers with her rebellion and one curse that God has chosen not to lift. In spite of all this pain associated with childbirth, womanís desire or yearning for her husband to produce children would be great.
Good thing too, because out of woman comes life. Adam understood this quite well, and after he received his curse from God, the first thing he did was give woman a name. He called her Eve which means life.
Ge 3:20 And Adam called his wife's name Eve, because she was the mother of all living.
Though Adam and Eve deserved death, Adam knew because of the curse put on Satan, that out of Eve would come life, out of Eve would come the Messiah. Itís interesting that Adamís name means red earth, or what we will all return to one day. It is symbolic of death. But Eve means life, out of woman would come the Messiah!
Who impregnated Mary? Was it man, Adam? No! It was the Holy Spirit and out of that conception came Life! Not red earth death of the first Adam!
After Adam and Eve leave the garden, she conceives and bears a son, and I just love the optimism associated with the birth of Cain. She calls him Cain and says, ďI have gotten a man from the Lord.Ē What she meant was she thought that Cain would be the Deliverer, the Messiah!
Isnít that just like a Mom? Always thinking the best, always imagining how wonderful their childrenís lives are going to be even before they are born. And even if their lives donít turn out that way, you know that Mom is going to do the best she can to make it turn out good.
Eve went on to have other children of course, but that is the story of the worldís first mother and what have we learned?
We learned that it is Godís plan for a woman to be a wife before she is a mother. We learned that it is God who places the hand of the bride into the hand of the groom. Marriage is a divine institution.
We learned that husband and wife are a unit, permanently glued together in marriage. The woman is to come alongside the man encouraging him and helping them to fulfill their God-given tasks. The man is to love his wife as Christ loved the church.
When these things are in place, we give mothers and fathers a good head start. We learned that potential mothers and fathers need to leave their mothers and fathers and be glued to each other.
Mothers know that they are going to experience great pain and discomfort in pregnancy but they are willing to endure it, in order that we might have life. (Now I donít want to elevate motherís too much here, but who does that remind you of? Mothers are a picture of what Jesus did for us on the cross! ) And finally, mothers are wonderful optimists concerning their children. They hope for the best, pray for the best, and expect the best.
Today is a good day to pause and thank all mothers for enduring the curse for our sakes. Thank you mothers for carrying us to term, thank you mothers for hoping for the best for us, and thank you mothers for praying for us, and thank you mothers for sacrificing that we might have the best.
Finally, let me say that the best gift a child can give their mother is the gift of knowing that her children are walking with the Lord. Young people, nurture your faith. Nurture that which was given to you at your baptism. Finish the race walking with Jesus.
There is a hymn called Lonely Graveyard, listen to itís refrain: "Listen to her pleading, `Wandr'ring boy, come home,' lovingly entreating, do not longer roam; Let your manhood waken, heavn'nward lift your eyes; If you love your mother, meet her in the skies."
This is the real prayer of the Christian mother for all her children, may God grant it to all of you here today.
